Satellite communications offers rapid access and unlimited mobility anywhere in the world. However, to install VSAT terminals at every customer premise is exorbitantly expensive. Therefore, VSAT service providers can increase their ROI by using Wireless as the last mile connection between their end customer and the VSAT backbone. This is the path chosen by DCC Satellite & Networks, a leading VSAT communications service provider from Nigeria.
DCC has connected their enterprise customers, who need office-to-office communication, to the VSAT terminal at their Network Operating Center (NOC) using smartBridges Nexus backhauls instead of deploying a VSAT terminal at the each customer site. Their customers include some of the leading banks and major enterpises in Nigeria.

smartBridges' Wireless Nexus backhauls link DCC's customers to the VSAT backbone at their NOC,
eliminating the need to deploy additional VSAT terminals
Albert Ayodeji Adanlawo, Project Engineer with DCC, implemented the network. He said, "I chose wireless networks because of the growing need of Nigerians for fast information dissemination and for the fact that a wireless network is a cost effective solution that is also easy to deploy and maintain. smartBridges radios fit the bill because of the flexible software configuration and easy adaptability to local requirements."
Most of DCC's customers require high speed connections to their branch offices in cities across Nigeria for application server sharing, VoIP and Internet access. Albert has used the entire range of Nexus radios including backhauls, access points and client devices, supplied by smartBridges' Channel Partner EMC Communication Infrastructure in Nigeria, to provide last mile wireless connectivity for these projects.
The deployment for a leading Nigerian bank uses eight radios, including two backhauls. The backhauls link the bank's headquarters in Lagos to DCC's NOC where their VSAT backbone is. Through DCC's extensive satellite network, staff at the bank's branches in other cities can now access their main application server, make VoIP calls and share broadband Internet access. DCC's combination of wireless and satellite networks offers an end-to-end, cost-effective communication solution to enterprises in Nigeria
At the NOC, Albert has also installed the airPoint Nexus PRO TOTAL access point, with an integrated multi-band antenna, and equipped the bank's branches in Lagos itself with the airClient Nexus client device. This eliminates the need to have multiple expensive VSAT terminals within the same city. The Nexus radios' 128 bit AES security encryption ensures that confidential data remains confidential and out of the reach of hackers.

Another deployment for a major enterprise uses six radios in a similar network. Albert remarked, "Our clients use these networks for broadband Internet connection, application server sharing, Voice over IP connectivity, wireless server backup, among other applications. By combining wireless and satellite technologies, we are now able to leverage our satellite network more fully and offer cost-effective solutions to our customers."
